11 de Julio
Before I dialog about today, I need to mention the record that Andrew and I set yesterday. We ate for a combine total of 34 quitzales, approximately $4.42. We’ve been keeping track of exactly how much we spend every day and looking for the places that give more for the price. It is the Vizcarra coming out in us. Oh, we also realized that there was a new night lamp that they in when they cleaned the room yesterday. It looks like that television is not far off. Today was about the most average day that I think I have spent in Panajachel. The most excitement we had was discovering that our travelers credit card was not working. This was a bit of a problem since tuition was due today. Fortunately for us, the owner, Gregorio, is the probably the nicest little Guatemalan man in the entire country. He doesn’t mind at all that we will be a little late on the payment. I realized today that I am starting to get an itch. Not from the many possible malaria stricken mosquito bites that cover my body, but rather to begin purchasing the indigenous wears in the marketplace. My initial plan was to wait till the last week and purchase all my goods. We’ll see how long that idea pans out. As in most tourist crawling areas, there are aggressive vendors here. Almost all are females and almost all are either really young or really old. They know very well that it is much harder to say no to a poor grandmother-like figure or an adorable, innocent looking 5 year old. They attack you when you are walking down the street, sitting down in a restaurant, or studying by the lake shore. I’m proud to say that I have never cracked… Well, once but it’s because I meant to…
